Include Attribution Tracking (UTMs)

Attribution Tracking allows you to see exactly where your WhatsApp leads are coming from.

Whether it’s through a direct click on a Meta ad or by browsing your website, Patagon AI helps you identify your traffic source so you can measure performance and optimize your marketing efforts.

Where to find Attribution settings

To access the scripts and link generators required for tracking, follow the steps below:

  1. Log in to Patagon AI

  2. Go to Management

  3. Select General

  4. Scroll down to the Attribution Tracking section

Method 1:

Click-to-WhatsApp Ads (Direct from Meta)

Use this method if you run Facebook or Instagram ads that open WhatsApp directly, without sending users through a landing page.

How does it work?

When a user clicks the “Send Message” button on an ad, they are taken directly to WhatsApp.

Patagon AI automatically tracks the ad (Ad) that generated the conversation.

What is tracked?

  • Ad level: currently, we identify the specific ad that generated the conversation.

Note: tracking at the Ad Set and Campaign level is in development and will be available soon.

No additional website configuration is required for this method.

Method 2:

Website or Landing Page to WhatsApp

Use this method if you send traffic to a website or landing page (e.g., Google Ads, organic search, or social media) and want to track users who click a “Chat on WhatsApp” button.

Setup Instructions

For this tracking to work properly, you must complete the 3 steps below.

Step 1: Install the Tracking Script

  1. Go to the Attribution Tracking section in Patagon AI

  2. Copy the provided Javascript code

  3. Paste this script into your website or landing page code

Installation example:

This script captures data such as:

  • UTMs (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, etc.)

  • Click identifiers (gclid, fbclid, etc.)

You can create as many links as you want, with different messages.

This allows you to personalize the conversation opening message based on where the user came from (e.g., main website, specific landing page, campaign, etc.).

How to do it

  1. In the Attribution Tracking section, write the message the user should send Example: I want more information

  2. The system will automatically generate a unique tracking link

  3. Copy the link and use it on the correct button/CTA

Link format

The generated link will be a patg.ai redirect (not a direct WhatsApp link).

Example:

Usage examples

Main Website If you want a standard button on your homepage, use the message:

Use the generated link on buttons like:

  • “Talk to an expert”

  • “Support”

  • “Contact us”

Promotional Landing Page If you have a specific campaign, use a more contextual message:

Use this link only on the landing page related to that promotion.

Step 3: Update Your Website Buttons

Once you have generated the correct link for the correct page:

  1. Open your website editor

  2. Find your existing WhatsApp buttons

  3. Replace the current URL with the Patagon AI tracking link

Important: if your website is still using wa.me, attribution may not be captured correctly. Example: replace wa.me/... with patg.ai/...

⚠️ Critical Info: How it works for the user

After the script and links are active, tracking depends on a unique reference code.

When a customer clicks a patg.ai link on your website:

  1. The script records session data (e.g., UTMs)

  2. WhatsApp opens with the message defined in Step 2

  3. Patagon AI automatically adds a tracking code at the end of the message

Example:

Why is this code important?

The [ref: ...] code works as the bridge between the website click and the WhatsApp chat, allowing us to connect the conversation to the correct source (e.g., campaign, ad, landing page, etc.).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

chevron-rightCan I use both methods at the same time?hashtag

Yes. If you run direct WhatsApp ads and also send traffic to a landing page, Patagon AI will track both simultaneously.

chevron-rightWhy does my attribution report show “Unknown” for some web leads?hashtag

This most commonly happens when:

  • The user deleted the [ref: CODE] from the first message

  • The user clicked an old button on your website that has not been updated with the new Patagon AI tracking link
